Green Banana is a social enterprise that was first set up by Mayfield & Easthouses Youth Project (Y2K) a number of years back with all our profits go back to the local community, helping to fund Y2K’s programme of work with young adults.

Community groups across Scotland are trying to set up businesses to provide local jobs, provide local services and make their communities viable and good places to live.

There are grants to help with some aspects of setting up community businesses, but these are often difficult to get and usually don't meet the full costs of getting established.  Bank loans are very expensive and the usual investors aren't interested in community businesses. 

Broadcairn Community Trust was set up two years ago as a non-profit organisation committed to using the resources at their disposal for the maximum possible social and environmental gain.

Castlemilk Stress Centre was set up back in 1994 with the intention of providing Stress Management services to people in the community who did not fit into the categories of other service providers e.g. drug and alcohol services, but who never the less were in need of support.

Main focus is on provision of high quality community and arts facilities and events; also manages a community transport project and acts as an information point for local community and visitors (14.05.04)

Greenyonder tours is a brand new, Edinburgh-based company, offering tours that will bring you closer to people and places you'd be unlikely to encounter otherwise, all on a green theme.

The Greyfriars Recycling of Wood Project started in 2008. It is open 4 days a week and has about 10 regular volunteers on each day. They transform unwanted church pews into beautiful, bespoke pieces of furniture.

Ladywood Leisure Centre is a community managed facility in Penicuik, Midlothian, run as a social enterprise by the Penicuik Community, Sport and Leisure Foundation.

Patons and Baldwins Recreation Club in Alloa is a community facility consisting of a bar, function hall and bowling club.  The facilities are used for bowling, functions, community events, bingo and social venue.

The gallery on the corner is the first social firm from Autism Ventures Scotland (AVS), part of the Autism Initiatives Group. AVS has been established to create employment opportunities and experiences for young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) in Scotland. It started trading on 23rd March.

A popular youth project, providing a social venue as well as support workers for young people in Keith. Now it has gone a step further by buying a restaurant in the town's main street. This will operate as a commercial venture with profits being gift aided back to Loft. (23.09.05)
