Sustainable Wood Solutions CIC

Sustainable Wood Solutions CIC is a Glasgow based Social Enterprise set up to reduce the amount of timber entering landfill. Tree Surgeons, Landscapers and Local Authorities supply us with waste timber to convert in to high quality products. This reduces waste, saves money and reduces carbon emissions.

Their activities include:
• making a range of products such as; quality biomass for heating, firewood, landscaping features, kiln dried hardwoods, flooring and whisky barrel flooring.
• working with schools and community groups to; raise awareness of recycling, carbon emissions, social enterprise, processing waste into useful products and create new woodland.
• working closely with a wide range of partners to develop projects that; create employment, provide education about renewable energy and plant new woodland.

The company was formed after Paul Cookson and Bruce MacLeod worked together on a project seeking to source a local timber supply for Glasgow MET College from Glasgow City Council owned woodland and parks.

During this project it became clear how much timber was produced within Glasgow, that most was being sent to landfill and yet there was a strong and growing demand for locally sourced timber.

Projects to date have included;
• Creating employment for 3 full time and 2 full time wood machinists, 2 admin and 1 sales staff
• Developing a wide range of quality timber products from waste logs
• Working with existing biomass users to overcome industry problems of chip quality and delivery systems
• Worked with schools across greater Glasgow to create woodland and education on recycling
• Developing and manufacturing products made from waste whisky barrels
