The Arts Guild Theatre was the primary arts venue in the Inverclyde area for more than 65 years, hosting a range of arts events from all disciplines. At the end of December ’12 we closed the doors on the Arts Guild Theatre as it was no longer fit for purpose and moved to The Beacon, a state-of-the-arts facility which houses one of the finest mid scale theatres in the UK. The Beacon has a stunning, intimate 500 seat main auditorium, a 130 seat, flexible studio theatre, three large rehearsal rooms and a bistro with superb views over the River Clyde.
The new building is a key community focus as part of the wider regeneration of former industrial land along the Inverclyde waterfront adjacent to the historic Georgian Custom House. It is sited on a prime location of a former dockyard in Greenock and is the base for an ambitious social enterprise and outreach programme. Its objectives include working with young people from socially challenged backgrounds, broadening participation in the arts and developing the employment prospects of people who have suffered mental health problems.
The Beacon’s mission is to be a landmark resource for cultural life in Scotland, a unique hub for the arts in which to be entertained by an inspiring range of events. It will maximise the impact of existing creative investment and it will increase that investment in central west Scotland. It will enhance the enjoyment and cultural experience of all who use it, helping make Inverclyde a more attractive place in which to live and to visit.
The Bistro and Events Catering at the Beacon is a social enterprise. The objective of this business is to provide employment and training opportunities for people who have had mental health problems. We will provide people with opportunities to have the dignity of quality employment and to gain new skills whilst having real prospects of promotion and self-advancement within a supportive management culture. A proportion of the profits will fund arts and education activities for young people at risk of offending in Inverclyde. To achieve all this we will to work closely with Inverclyde Association for Mental Health, Scottish Association for Mental Health, Inverclyde Council, Inverclyde Community & Health Service Partnership. Whilst enjoying the best quality food, drink and service at the Beacon Bistro all you will know is that you are helping to enhance life in Inverclyde as part of your good night out.
