Glasgow Women’s Library

Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) has been providing information, resources and services since 1991. It developed from a broad-based arts organisation called Women in Profile, which was set up in 1987 with the aim of ensuring the representation of women’s culture during Glasgow’s year as the European City of Culture in 1990.

Glasgow Women’s Library’s events and activities range from one-to-one literacy tutoring to creative scrapbooking workshops, from screenings of challenging women’s films to walks that explore the hidden histories of women in Glasgow. At the heart of our work is a belief in the importance of women’s lives and experiences, and the Learning and Collection teams work together to create a programme that reflects this.

The Lifelong Learning Programme provides a range of creative and innovative courses, events, workshops, activities and other learning opportunities for women in the Glasgow area.

The Adult Literacy and Numeracy Project provides direct one-to-one and group tutoring and guidance to women in Glasgow who wish to improve their reading, writing and number skills.

The Black and Minority Ethnic Women’s Project delivers a dedicated Lifelong Learning Programme aimed at BME women, focusing on personal development and social and cultural capital investment.

The National Lifelong Learning Project draws on the experience of GWL in this field, working with partners in key geographical locations in Scotland to expand the GWL Lifelong Learning Programme through a ‘palette’ of learning opportunities.

The Librarian plays a vital role in making our library books accessible to library users, visitors, staff and volunteers.
The Archive is an invaluable and unique resource providing vital evidence of women’s achievements, culture and lives, and making these materials accessible to all is the priority of our Archivist.

Volunteers have been at the heart of our work: without their dedication the library would not have become the successful and vibrant organisation it is.

For just £5 per month you can become a Friend of GWL and help support the Library's important work – see, http://womenslibrary.org.uk/how-to-get-involved/become-a-friend/
