Tayside Re-Users is a social enterprise founded in 1992 in Dundee as an environmental charity with the main aim to divert goods from landfill thereby providing a sustainable use for goods too easily discarded by a throwaway society. The organisation has recently become a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) in addition to changing its name to better reflect the re-use nature of the organisation.
Tayside Re-Users collects and sells a huge variety of goods which would otherwise end up in landfill. It handles all manner of household and office goods, including white goods, and electrical items large and small. It also retails a large selection of DIY and bikes, clothing and bric-a-brac are also available. It offers an Aladdin's cave of fascinating items.
Preparing the items for re-use is an extremely important aspect of the business providing work for 11 people and over 15 volunteers. We offer placements to the local open prison population as well as youngsters preparing for work.
The aims of Tayside Re-Users are:
• To advance environmental protection and improvement by promoting waste reduction through reuse and recycling.
• To provide relief of unemployment by creating opportunities to build skills in waste reduction and provide volunteering placements.
• To promote education and awareness by encouraging and demonstrating the sustainable use of resources.
Tayside Re-Users works closely with other social enterprises and are members of the Dundee Social Enterprise Network. We have a service level agreement with Dundee City Council to provide essential furniture for those on low incomes.
The future for Tayside Re-Users is to start Upcycling old furniture to attract new customers and to continue the employability and skills agenda so that zero waste is the norm and discarding useful goods is the last resort.
