Darling's Coffee Shop (Arbroath)
A social enterprise cafe that gives young people with learning difficulties the skills to move into mainstream employment has won a national award. Darling's opened last year in Arbroath High Street, providing coffee, cakes and the chance for youngsters to gain 16 weeks of valuable work experience. The cafe is run by the charity Enable Scotland and staffed by young people with learning difficulties.
Darling's has just been recognised in the Scottish Home Baking Awards, where it won the Outstanding Achievement award, and the team is now proudly displaying the trophy in the cafe. Manager Sharlene Burns said: "It makes a huge difference to them. I think vital work and life skills, being part of a team, turning up for work on time and being able to earn your own money is what these young people have now got.
The coffee shop, which serves locally sourced food in a modern, fresh and friendly environment, provides an opportunity for young people in Angus who have a learning disability to develop employability skills, boosting their confidence and helping to increase their potential to secure meaningful employment.
The project, which is managed by ENABLE Scotland and funded by The Big Lottery, has been established to provide much needed additional training and employment opportunities for young people who have a learning disability in the Angus area.
Young people who have a learning disability often experience isolation and loneliness, which is in part due to high rates of unemployment for people who have a learning disability. This project will transform the lives of young people and those who are close to them
