theSPACE is a social enterprise of Uprising East Lothian, a youth based business and charity working hard to put youth positively and visibly into community. Its roots are deep and stretch back years to running a community music space and group called Phantassie Sound from an attic above a packing house on an organic farm at Phantassie in East Linton. From there, a summer skatepark emerged in a dusty tattie shed on the same farm in 2009 and 2010.

These ventures were really successful and those involved sensed that they might have a potential community business in its early stages of development. Then in October 2010, they  made the move to the Ben Sayer building in North Berwick and after much graft and imagination, opened the doors of theSPACE in July 2011. The intention was to run a self-financing business operationally and raise funding for working with schools and supporting work towards their social purpose.

So far theSPACE has been able to run a vibrant and profitable social enterprise but they are aware that it takes a huge amount of ongoing effort to sustain a business, especially a new business in difficult financial times. They are determined to make it viable in the long-term and keep their commitment to boosting the chances and opportunities of young people in their communities.

theSPACE has this month produced a public statement – that tells it as it is. See,
