North East Arts Touring (NEAT)

North East Arts Touring (NEAT) has been bringing professional touring performances to the North East of Scotland since 1985 via a network of volunteer promoters. NEAT promotes professional theatre and dance performances for children, family and adults alike and their venues vary from village halls to schools, to church halls, to the great outdoors.

Some shows are organised by NEAT, but most are run by local arts promoters with our assistance. We support performances in theatres, village halls and other venues across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus

The actual social impact of NEAT is greater than simply the promotion of the arts; they reduce social isolation within rural communities, especially amongst the elderly, and also provide ease of access to high quality professional performances by bringing culture to the centre of communities. The need for long travel to major cities to view performances is reduced due to the local accessibility. Additionally, there is also a wider economic impact of boosting the local rural economies as a result of attracting professional performances, activities and shows. For example local restaurants, hotels and venues receive increased trade when shows are held in rural locations.

NEAT has completed a successful rural film screening network pilot titled NEAT FLICKS. This pilot came about initially through a scoping study that was commissioned by Aberdeenshire Council to establish the extent of rural cinema and film provision in the locality. The results of this study were used to provide evidence for a funding application to Esmee Fairbairn to fund the pilot project and for a part time project co-ordinator. The study also formed the basis of a successful application to Awards for All for two sets of mobile cinema equipment.

Over the next year NEAT will further develop NEAT FLICKS, the network of volunteer promoters, and will promote film screenings in rural venues across the North East.
