The WHALE-Pod

The WHALE Arts Centre is a vibrant, community owned organisation serving the South West of Edinburgh. There is lots going on here in our eco-friendly building but we think there is an opportunity to create more of a buzz by working with new start enterprises with a creative focus.

We currently offer a wide array of arts and creative activities for a range of ages, interests and abilities – including our outreach, Street Arts team, and the hosting of a community journalism project, the Digital Sentinel. Our facilities include purpose designed performance and rehearsal space, an arts and crafts workshop, darkroom, recording studio, digital art lab and meeting spaces. We also offer good quality, serviced office space for more established social enterprises.

Earlier this year we received support from Creative Scotland to establish the WHALE-Pod. This provides support for individuals seeking to develop their ideas into a business. Those who join us get:

·         very low cost rent on easy ‘in and out’ terms
·         customised business development support from Community Enterprise to help you realise your goals
·         access to workshops to help you grow
·         the chance to work with others at a similar stage
·         the backing of WHALE Arts for your ideas
·         support with funding and small amount of discretionary funding to help get your idea off the ground.

Some of the people who have joined us include: Adriana Labastie, director of SophianDionysus, who is developing new ways of exploring philosophical ideas though drama; Jordan Butler a passionate, hip hop and rap artist specialising in lyric writing and interactive beat making for young people; and Miroslav Mitrovic , a multi-disciplinary therapeutic practitioner with experience of working in conflict zones providing one-to-one and group-based drama and film-making for healing and growth.

Adriana and Miroslav recently trialled their developing models at Social in the Square delivered by the Edinburgh Social Enterprise Network.
