The Crags Community Sports Centre

A group of basketballers re-opened the Centre in January 2012 after it was closed by the local authority. The Centre is now up and running featuring community groups like basketball, roller derby and aerial yoga. Located in South-Central Edinburgh, the Centre consists of a large games hall, studio, social reception area and open-access outdoor pitch. The Crags believes in the potential of sport to develop people and build communities. Its first year featured many highlights on the way towards the vision of a fully sustainable social enterprise.

A range of community clubs now call the Crags home including basketball, volleyball and roller derby (they even have keys to the building). Each week, they provide drop-in access and diversionary activities for young people.
During the day local schools receive prioritised access for PE classes. After-school, the Centre hosts classes for kids in basketball, fencing, unicycling and athletics. Our studio hosts weekly classes for adults in aerial yoga, tang soo do, pole dancing, pilates and hip hop dance.

Background
The Centre was originally built 10 years ago through the hard work of local people following a very long campaign to the Council.
The community organisation subsequently passed the facility to Council control and it failed as a financial proposition and a community resource, resulting in its closure in 2010. A council procurement process was won by a joint Boroughmuir Blaze Basketball Club/basketballscotland submission.

Governance
A 25 year ‘peppercorn’ lease was signed with City of Edinburgh Council by a new Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation called The Crags Community Sports Centre (SC042676).
Trustees are nominated by Boroughmuir Blaze Basketball Club, basketballscotland and Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association.

Classes for kids
The Crags has teamed up with Active Schools and a range of different sports to offer after-school classes in activities like basketball, street-dance, break-dance, taekwondo, athletics and more.

Classes for adults
Dance, fitness and wellbeing classes are starting up in our bright dance studio. Weekly casual badminton is also available in the games hall.

Community groups and clubs
A range of community sports groups and clubs have access to the Centre. From basketball to volleyball to roller derby there are opportunities to try out a new club or book the Centre for your group.

Events
The Crags is a truly unique space for performances, meetings, exhibitions, workshops, productions, celebrations and shows. A central location, unique facilities and our partnership approach makes The Crags different from every other event space in Edinburgh.
