Driftwood Cinema takes the cinema experience to a multitude of venues; community halls, schools, commercial spaces and the great outdoors. It creates community-led and centred film events, showing classic films alongside local historical short films, reaching those audiences who cannot make it to the fixed base cinemas in the region.
The workshops help people to record the social events and everyday life of Dumfries and Galloway using their smart phones or video cameras, edit them and then show them on the big screen ahead of the main feature; building up a social archive of life and living in these areas.
Nowadays we have a great capacity to film everyday life and events in reasonable quality on our smart phones, but very little of it gets beyond the person who filmed it, or edited down to a short film that others might be interested to watch. These clips are the social archive for the future.
Serving rural communities, Driftwood’s aim is to bring the Cinema to your village and provide community events centred around an evening of new or old film. Recreating the cinema experience they don't just show one film, they add in local and historical short films relevant to your community and, to add to the fun, they ask your community to contribute your own short clips, taken on your video camera or mobile phone, so your chance to see yourself on the big screen.
As a social enterprise, they reinvest their income to provide more and better services to the community that they serve. They keep ticket prices for community events as low as possible so that everyone can get involved and get the chance to see big screen entertainment right on their doorstep. To keep the projectors on, they hire out their indoor and outdoor equipment for private events, making a special occasion just that bit more special. Their mobile cinema equipment can be set up indoors or out (weather permitting), so why not spend an evening in the great outdoors, underneath the stars, watching an old classic or a new blockbuster.
