Development Coll exists to promote the sustainable development and regeneration of the Isle of Coll for the benefit of residents, visitors, groups and businesses. It is owned and managed by the local community and is a development trust with charitable status. The company was formed in April 2006 in order to fulfil the needs of the Island of Coll as set out in the development plan which was drawn up following Community Consultation in 2005.
The intention is to tackle local issues and improve the quality of life to help build a vibrant and sustainable community. An Cridhe is the island’s brand new community centre, opened 2012, and is now at the heart of life on Coll. It is a multi-purpose facility that caters for the many different needs of islanders and visitors.
An Cridhe makes an excellent venue for a variety of events from meetings and conferences to weddings, parties and ceilidhs. If you’ve got an idea for an event or are interested in holding a function then please don’t hesitate to get in touch
with our members of staff who will be happy to help you.
Coll Bunkhouse is a new, purpose-built hostel situated in the centre of Arinagour, right next door to An Cridhe. Sleeping up to 16 people, the bunkhouse has two mixed dormitories with six beds in each and a four bed room which can be booked as a twin, a triple or a quad. The bunkhouse is open all year round but is busiest throughout the summer months of June, July and August.
All income generated by Coll Bunkhouse is used to support the charitable aims of Development Coll. Bunkhouse customers typically come to Coll for the natural beauty of the island, the abundant wildlife and the opportunity to escape from the faster pace of life found on the mainland. Guests tend to be a mixture of independent travellers, families and groups but all are keen to explore the natural environment which Coll has to offer.
A ‘community housing group’ has been set up here on Coll which has met regularly over recent months with the intention of taking this project forward.
Their mobile mast was up and running by May 2015. The 4G coverage that it brings to most of the island is important and valuable not only for the small businesses, locals and visitors but also for the various utility companies serving Coll.
