Business Community Connections

Business Community Connections (BCC) is an emerging social enterprise.  Our key objective is to help support and improve the local economy in deprived areas within the Edinburgh and Midlothian area.  We do this in three ways:

a) Little France Traders

This is a growing network of new or very small local businesses and social enterprises.  At the beginning of 2005 we had 80+ members and expect this to grow to 200 trading members over the next two years.

We promote Little France Traders and provide a brokerage service to win additional custom and contracts, especially from the staff, visitors and patients at the New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, which is on our doorstep.

By working with these traders to improve their capacity and to develop services suited to the local market we can bring additional income into local economy, thus creating and retaining jobs in disadvantaged areas such as Craigmillar, South Edinburgh and Midlothian.

b) every thing

every thing is the name of our shop in the main mall at the hospital.  The shop helps to generate income to contribute towards our sustainability, through sales of gifts and by charging commission on goods and services sold on behalf of local traders.

We link hospital staff to a wide range of services available locally including an errand service, dry cleaning, prescription and photo developing.

We have a treatment room, allowing 12+ alternative therapists to offer services.

And the shop itself showcases products and services available from the local community.

c) Castlebrae High School

We support a wide range of school activities which introduce pupils to the world of work and we generate income to pay for many extra curricular activities such as tutoring, trips, school starter packs for every pupil and much more.

Funding
All of our activities are supported by cash and in kind donations from over 20 Large and small businesses from across Edinburgh.

Key public sector funding comes from ERDF and SEEL.  And the hospital where our work is focussed also provides income as donations and via a service level agreement.

A growing proportion of our income comes from shop sales and membership of the Little France Traders network.
