Home Basics was set up in 1999 by the Tweeddale Association of Voluntary Organisations, became an independent company with charitable status in October 2002. Its area of operation is the whole of the Scottish Borders, except Berwickshire.
Its aim is to collect and refurbish furniture and other household items, including electrical goods, donated by the public, and pass them on to persons, referred to it by welfare agencies, to help them set up a home at minimal cost. It also provides volunteering opportunities, and training/work experience for disadvantaged people.
In 10 years of operation, Home Basics has resold over 300,000 kg of furniture items, and so reduced the amount of material going to landfill.
The company is based in Walkerburn, Scottish Borders with a second depot in Hawick. A van for collection of donated items operates from the Hawick depot servicing the whole of the Borders area.
At present Home Basics generates income through public sales of excess stock each week, twice in Walkerburn (Thursday and Saturday) and once in Hawick (Wednesday).
The Company was honoured to receive the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award 2003 for "Unsung Heroes" (1 of only 20 charities in Scotland) It also received the New Ways "Vibrant Communities Award" 2003 and it is an Investor in People. In readiness for the computer-recycling department it is also a Microsoft Approved Re-furbisher.
The company has a large number of registered volunteers, a Board of Directors (also volunteers) one full and 5 part time members of staff.
