The West Kilibride Community Initiative Ltd

The West Kilbride Community Initiative Ltd is made up of a group of community volunteers who formed ourselves into a Ltd Company three years ago. We are a registered Charity and an enrolled environmental body. Our main aim is to regenerate the Town Centre of West Kilbride. We realised these empty shops would never open up as butchers, bakers etc, so we decided we had to diversify into some form of specialised theme. Our aim now is to have West Kilbride designated "Scotland's Craft Town" in the same way as Wigtown was designated "Scotland's Book Town".

We have leased and manage the Public Hall from the Council to prevent its closure. We also lease and operate a shop which acts as a craft display/ information centre. In 2001, we purchased the former Barony Church Building, a beautiful building in the heart of the town, which is in desperate need of repair. Our plan is that this becomes the hub for the town`s regeneration and a focal point for our community.

We are also involved in developing an outdoor Theatre on the site of the old Corn Mill and Gas Works. This unique project has attracted considerable interest and has gone forward into the ITN "Year of Promise" scheme for the Millenium Year.

In addition, the Community Initiative is also developing an innovative new recycling scheme. The new Green Centre will recycle the village's domestic organic waste through composting and vermi-composting – using worms. The project has been made possible by using monies made available through the Landfill Tax credits scheme.

Construction of the Centre, located in a disused quarry off Well Street, is well under way. It is due to be completed by the end of August.

At the moment, we are being filmed for a Beechgrove Garden project that will be televised next Thursday (4th July). We have been a finalist in the "Scotland in Bloom" competition for the past two years, this year we are making a real concerted effort and have just hung 320 floral displays around the town, hopefully this will encourage people to come and visit.
