Four Winds Inspiration Centre
Four Winds Inspiration Centre is an environmental, education and craft based charity located in Edinburgh. Established in 1998, we are a grass roots organisation, working for the benefit of present and future generations in line with Local Agenda 21, the Global / Local Action Plan for Sustainable Living, arising from the Earth Summit [Rio de Janeiro 1992]. We aim to provide a platform for positive community action and interaction in relation to important social and environmental issues. The backbone of the project is the utilisation of a percentage of the City's waste wood resource ~ arising as a result of the annual City of Edinburgh Council Dutch Elm Disease control programme and other tree management.
The project creates sculptures, benches, window boxes etc. from the felled elm timber. Each product is individually created ~ designed to suit your needs, premises / site and budget. We will discuss your chosen theme, e.g. flora, fauna, abstract etc. and then produce a unique item especially for you.
We are able to give demonstrations at your site (landscape permitting) prior to the production of the item as well as providing the delivery with a flourish! This could be in the form of finishing the article with the children's involvement or providing a musical fanfare for the installation. We can supply estimates and quotations in writing to facilitate fund raising or grant applications.
Volunteers are invited to join us to undertake various tasks.
Helping us debark the elm: the bark must be removed and burnt to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease.
Publicity: we need help circulating information about our craft classes and distributing our programmes.
Gardening: help us in our demonstration garden. We are developing the garden in many ways and often need help with potting, weeding, planting, tidying etc.
Site tidying: it is an ongoing task to keep our beautiful site tidy. Help us by spreading wood chips and preparing the area for visitors.
Activities: we provide activities for people with special needs, disabilities, etc. At times there are opportunities to become involved in these sessions.
What we can produce:
Custom Constructed and Carved benches, tables, window boxes, bowers, bowls, shelves, sculptures, mushrooms, animals … for homes, gardens or playgrounds. We can produce individual items to suit your budget. We are happy to undertake Commissions and upgrade school playgrounds etc with the involvement of teachers / pupils / parents.
Each project is individually designed to your requirements and can involve on site demonstrations, interaction and activity / interpretative visits to Four Winds .

Wind Turbine Construction
Monday 17th to Saturday 22nd Feb 2003, 10am ~ 5pm.
£210.00 per place. Six day course with Hugh Piggott This workshop will inspire, empower, and inform participants who wish to learn about small wind turbine design and safe construction. It caters for people from all backgrounds, age-groups, nationalities, and educational levels. We would hope to complete two wind turbines during the project, and make progress with others. Each day, a modest amount of theoretical introduction will lead to opportunities to gain hands-on experience: carving wooden blades; winding coils and fitting magnets into purpose built alternators; wiring; fabrication; erection, etc. as time allows. Participants who bring their own ideas and materials are welcome: they will be able to take the complete (or partially complete)components home with them.
