The Green Door Cafe

In 1999, St.Monans was going through a slump - boat building was at a minimum and shops were closing down - apathy in the village was at an all time high - the village had no focus. In the village was a fruit and vegetable shop that had lain empty for sometime. So, the Committee secured the lease of the old fruit shop with intent to turn it into a community internet cafe. This was at a time when internet cafes were not as common as they are today. The group had no funds so they set about raising the vast amount of money required in order to meet with current health and safety regulations and disability access. Tirelessly the group held events such as the duck race, pirate night, ceilidh and other such events, the onerous task of applying for funding and they did all this in just over 2 years. They raised over £40,000 and successfully secured lottery funding too.

The Committee - professional people of all ages having not dealt with this type of project before found inner strength and hidden depths that weren't fully realised - to deal with builders, plumbers, interior designers, council officials and attend many meetings - but they made it!

The Green Door Cafe opened its doors on 15th July 2002. The Cafe has a Manager and three staff. Volunteers in whatever capacity are made welcome. It serves wholesome, nutritional, homemade and good value food and a healthy eating award is pending. The Cafe now seats 24 persons and other facilities include takeaway products, photocopying, internet access and colour faxing facilities.

A Wide Range of Events

The village is actively involved in what happens in the cafe with suggestions being readily reviewed by the staff, as the cafe is for the community and tourists alike. They have open events in the cafe ranging from a de-stress evening with a complementary therapist, to makeover nights for the under 10s. Also a Russian/Japan night with authentic food went down a treat. Storytelling is a regular monthly feature too. All ages use the cafe to meet and communicate where perhaps there wasn't the opportunity before.
