Tiree Community Development Trust

The Tiree Community Development Trust (The Trust) was formed in March 2006 and is owned, and managed by Tiree’s community. It represents a community led approach to rural development promoting the sustainable, environmental, economic and social development of Tiree.

The Trust is governed by a board of nine Directors, resident to the Isle of Tiree. The Directors are elected annually by The Trust members. The Trust employs two full time staff; a Project Officer and a Financial Administrator.

Over the next 5 years, through the delivery of the Plan and through working in partnership with all, Tiree could set itself the following targets as it works towards its vision:

• To build at least 15 new affordable houses for rent
• To create 20 more permanent jobs
• To maintain the number of crofting businesses and cattle at current levels whilst
increasing the quality of stock
• To increase Tiree's resident population by 10%
• To make Tiree a 100% renewable energy consuming island with high standards
of energy efficiency
• To complete 5 community 'Flagship Projects' taken from this Plan
• To make Tiree a quality tourist destination and improve visitor satisfaction
Tiree is currently in the process of planning the installation of an 850kw wind turbine at Ruaig Sliabh on the island. The single turbine, owned by Tiree Renewable Energy Ltd. (itself wholly owned by the island's development trust), will stand on a 49m tower with a blade length of 26m, and is expected to generate revenues for the island's community of around £100,000 a year.
