Rag Tag n Textile
Rag Tag n Textile is a recycling textile project in Lochalsh and has just moved to new premises in Balmacara Square.
They use their workshop facilities to create new fashion items and soft furnishings of high quality from discarded and unwanted fabric or clothing. There is a continuous supply of raw materials from the local charity shops, who take up to twenty bags of “waste” off the island every week. They hope eventually to offer a waste collection service for other textile industries, they design and create all their own products from other peoples waste.
They are innovative and do not compete with any other venture in the locality. They offer training opportunities for their workers in traditional skills such as: Hand knitting and crochet; Patchwork; Rag-rugging; Soft furnishings and Hand and Machine sewing.
The workshop was opened officially on Monday 2 July. Rag Tag n Textile is a registered charity which aims to become a social enterprise, employing and training people who are vulnerable and marginalised by ill-health or disadvantage, from getting back to work. This is a community project on several levels, collecting and diverting waste textiles from landfill, designing and creating new fashion items, from discarded waste, creating high quality textile art - weaving with words exhibition, for example.
But the most important aim is to support people by helping them to regain skills and confidence in themselves, by teaching them traditional handcraft skills such as hand sewing, knitting, crochet, patchwork, rug-making. They will be holding workshops throughout the winter in various handcraft skills - look out for the adult learning programme. They were recently shortlisted for an Innovation award through CRNS.
Now that the workshop is up and running, they are looking for extra space to sort and store the textiles. If anyone can offer them premises, please contact Shirley, Alison or Vicki on 01599 566793 or 566222
