Cothrom
Cothrom is a social enterprise that provides a range of community-based learning and training activities through a network of centres located across the Western Isles.
Cothrom Ltd is currently taking forward the construction of a £1.1m learning centre at Ormiclate. This facility will accommodate a skills workshop, nursery, multi-purpose training area, and office space. It will treble the physical capacity of the organisation, allowing it to develop new programmes, and provide a base for other statutory and voluntary organisations to provide community services.
This has allowed them to create an important new community-owned asset and promote the financial sustainability of Cothrom Ltd. Additional earned income will be generated through nursery fees, letting fees, business and consultancy support, a community website and new programmes (e.g. skills workshop). This will reduce the reliance of Cothrom Ltd on ongoing public grant subsidy.
Cothrom Ltd is looking to improve access to services, reduce isolation, and enhance community learning and employability. They directly support six jobs, have created 20 childcare places and provide an additional 25 training places. In doing so, they will increase the chances of sustained employment for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and improve access to high quality services for the most disadvantaged groups and individuals in rural communities.
