The Machars Action

Marchars Action grew out of a local development project initiated by the former Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council, in partnership with representatives from the Community Council, in partnership with representatives from the Community Council and Business Associations in the Machars of Wigtownshire. At first, the community representatives saw themselves as only a pressure group the make sure that the authorities listened to local opinion and took some action. However, when they realized it might be possible to have a more influential budget on their own, it seemed too good a chance to miss. After talking it over with each of the Community Councils in turn, the representatives decided to go ahead and set up a company limited by guarantee, that would belong to the people of the Machars.

At their offices at 26 South Main Street, Wigtown, they provide a range of services. Their aim is to look for ways of improving the quality of social and economic life in Machars by providing services that support the activities of groups and individuals.

Machars Acton is not profit making, but they look to cover costs whenever possible. Because they support and encourage community and voluntary organisations, these groups are charged lower rates than commercial operators or bodies that have substantial finding of their own.
