Helm Training

Helm Training, currently celebrating its 25th year, is a charity based in Dundee and Angus that provides a range of targeted training, lifeskills and workplace skills aimed at helping young people aged between 15-19 years. The training provided focuses predominately on supporting young people who are not in education, employment or training and aims to be flexible and responsive to their needs. Helm works with around 200 young people every year with many going ultimately into full-time employment, experiencing placements, and starting a range of courses in Further Education colleges.

Helm Training has a vision and purpose to help change the lives of the young people it works with. Our aim is to develop vocational and personal skills, improve the health and welfare, and further the hopes and ambitions of these young people as they take their part in the future of Scotland.

The main focus of the training at Helm is on core skills, literacy and numeracy, IT and other employability skills, but in some cases, where young people struggle to cope with these modules, due to educational issues and learning disabilities, projects and practical skills play a key role in boosting confidence, developing teamwork skills and promoting outdoor activity. Currently Helm offers a range of project-based work including gym and dance, boxercise, weekly football, practical arts and crafts, graffiti art, health and beauty and cooking.

Over the last two years, Helm has developed an innovative training project based on a local allotment association site in Dundee which has become an area for producing a range of home-grown produce, and cover related conservation, maintenance and healthy cooking activities. This year a second plot has been taken on and skills in site maintenance are being covered as well as vegetable and plant production.

Trainees have access to a nutritional and personal health clinic and receive a personal health plan which if they wish helps them to set out goals to reduce their sugar, alcohol or smoking intake. Trainees are also working alongside LIVE It! through ASDAN Home Management course.
